Trouble for Lucia is a novel written by E. F. Benson, published in 1939. Trouble for Lucia is the sixth volume of the Mapp and Lucia series.

In Trouble for Lucia, Lucia learns to ride a bicycle, and we live through the saga of Blue Birdie (Mrs. Wyse's dead budgerigar [parakeet] invoke in a seance).Lucia and Georgie renew their acquaintance with the operatic diva Olga Braceley and the composer Cortese, but nobody in Tilling believes her when she claims to have entertained a duchess overnight. Lucia becomes Mayor of Tilling and Miss Mapp is appointed her Mayoress.

Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 - 29 February 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E. F. Benson.
Benson's first book was Sketches from Marlborough. He started his novel writing career with the (then) fashionably controversial Dodo (1893), which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama.

A prolific writer, Benson created the famous Mapp and Lucia series, which satirized upper-middle class British life in the 1920s and 30s. He also developed a reputation for writing macabre ghost stories and other stories of the supernatural, which have been adapted for film and television.

Just finished this sixth book in the Mapp & Lucia series, and laughed all the way through all six. The competition between Mapp and Lucia is always front and center. No one is more pedantic and pretentious than Lucia. She is intent on making Tilling a center of intellectual and artistic activity. Lucia advocates for social reforms that benefit the poor—clear the slums and pasteurize the milk. The general population gets film censorship and benches in sunny locations. And she is willing to raise taxes by "leaps and bounds". Adversary Elizabeth Mapp has been appointed "Mayoress" by Lucia with the philosophy of "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer". Someone kills their budgie bird when they accidentally sit on it, a dog chews and eats Major Flint's riding crop, "quaint" Irene becomes more prominent, Lucia learns to ride a bike, and the Duchess of Sheffield dominates the lives of Mapp and Lucia. Life in Tilling becomes exciting when all these events are rippling through their lives at the same time. The book ends with me wanting more, but I know that is impossible. However, BBC is filming a new Mapp and Lucia series to be shown in the fall of 2014. I hope to see it in the US soon thereafter.
I say farewell to Riseholme and Tilling as I fear their days are numbered. There are no children in either community, and only one woman of child-bearing age, and there are no eligible bachelors.

Trouble for Lucia edition by E F Benson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is the last in a series of six hilarious books about Lucia and her frenenmies in two small towns in pre-WWII England. The characters are middle-aged, middle class, and of no more than middling intelligence and character. But don't tell them I said so! A more self-satisfied bunch never lived and they find themselves (and each other) wildly fascinating. The reader is happily drawn into their feuds and fads and bitchy gossip. Think of it as early "reality TV."

In this last book, Lucia's drive, guile, and nerve have brought her to a stage where she seems invincible. Once widowed, she is now happily (although chastely) married to her old friend and follower Georgie Pillson. She has at last obtained the house of her dreams - a dignified Queen Anne home that commands a full view of Tilling and its inhabitants. Thanks to lucky investments during the booming 1920's stock market, she is wealthier than she's ever been. And by spending some of that wealth judiciously, she's managed to get herself appointed Mayor of Tilling. What could stop her now?

Fortunately, Lucia's ego will ALWAYS cause her to overstep the bounds of reason and her friends are quick to resent her attempts to patronize and control them. Bridge without betting? Preposterous! On the other hand, who but Lucia could get a bunch of middle aged, totally sedentary people to ride bikes?

Lucia's new status as "Your Worship" (mayor) is only part of the excitement in Tilling. The irrepressible Diva opens a coffee shop, Susan is drawn into spiritualism. And eccentric artist Irene Coles paints a strange picture and becomes a national celebrity. But it's the re-appearance of Georgie's glamorous former girlfriend that really sets the cat among the pigeons. Can Lucia hang onto her husband?

Ideally, you should read the whole series to get the full favor, although each book can be read as a stand-alone. Several low-cost collections of the Lucia books have been offered, but (sadly) all have been taken down. I wouldn't pay $10 or anything close to it for this book. Hopefully, another reasonably priced collection will be available to users in the future. In the meantime, used paperback editions can be found for a few dollars.
If you have read one of the series, you have read them all. It's well written and humorous, but incredibly shallow.
A fun read. What's amazing is how quickly you get drawn into this small circle of people who don't do very much of anything remarkable. It's like a 1920's version of "Seinfeld"
The cassettes were in good order but the casing was falling to pieces.
If the final entry in the Lucia series doesn't quite live up to the earlier novels, no matter. It will still give a great deal of pleasure to Anglophiles and lovers of social satire and understated humor that respects the intelligence of the reader. Lucia is like Becky Sharp, but without the claws.
